Linguistic Assistance and Tutoring A keen communicator, I provide linguistic assistance in a wide variety of circumstances. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss your needs. I tutor French from beginners to university students and beyond, German from beginners to advanced, and Spanish beginners and intermediates.
I also tutor English language and literature, and teach English as a foreign language.
Learning a foreign language brings not only a new means of communication, but the ability to make connections and broaden horizons. A language is a gateway to another culture. It holds so much of the identity of a people. Speaking a foreign language, we cross a boundary of difference. As we engage with different sonorities and structures, as we harmonise our vocal chords and our thinking with a new energy, so we come into greater cross-cultural understanding. Learning a foreign language isn't only practical. I believe it creates a means for more open-mindedness, and that it can help bring harmony to the human world. Becoming familiar with a new language is also a means to discover and express a different aspect of ourselves. We are not quite the same in any one language. We will also feel more comfortable in one language than another, even if we speak them to the same level. I believe this has to do with how the vibrations of a language match our own. Sometimes we discover that we are more comfortable in a foreign language than in our mother tongue. This is why if you have had a difficult experience with one language, it is still worth giving another one a go and seeing how you take to it. Learning a foreign language demands dealing with different methods of sentence structure and ways of expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas. Literal translation rarely works. It thus develops flexibility in the brain, and can hence help to develop problem solving skills and improve the ability to pick up new information, assisting with learning other subjects.
I am bilingual English - French, fluent in German and Spanish, with a growing knowledge of Italian.
I spent 10 years growing up in France, attending French school, sitting the Baccalauréat, and continuing on to initial studies in Art and Design. Whilst enrolled on a BA in French and German at university in the UK, I spent a year living in the countryside between Mannheim and Heidelberg, in Germany. I later undertook classes in Spanish for speakers of multiple languages, before travelling to Venezuela, where I fell in love and made my home on and off for 2 1/2 years. My use of these languages is maintained through connections and work in the UK, as well as regular travel to France, Germany and Spain among others, and indeed also to Italy, where my love for the art that bursts forth from every nook and cranny is deepening the bond between myself and the Italian language.
